In this song the storyteller's voice is Saint Peter speaking to his colleagues: in August 6th and 9th 1945  thousands of souls arrived at once at the gates of Paradise. They were killed by two atomic bombs: the second and third prototypes ever used after the first one tested in Mexico. This bombing was a test too, as the bombs were technologically different and of course passed the test: more than 200.000 deads.

Timing is crucial, as speed is fundamental for the armies  and vital for politics.

From the biginning of July Japan was sending peace proposals to Stalin and to the Allied; but no one listened as the race had started. Italy too declared war to Japan in July 15th 1945, hoping to get something at the end of the war without doing anything.

Stalin arrived first to Europe and conquered Berlin, while in the Pacific Japanese and Americans were still dying by the thousands.

What was worryng America was the large deployment of troops in Manchuria by Stalin. You had to be quick.

On August 6th the first bomb was dropped and it could be enough. But two days after  Stalin declared war to Japan and the Red Army begun to move from Manchuria: and it seemed unstoppable. So the day after Truman decided to drop a second bomb and, moreover, he  changed  the target at the last minute because weather was bad and bombed Nagasaki. This represented the first act of the Cold War: an action with the aim of flexing your muscles against Communists, even if it meant to cancel completeley a town made by wooden houses.

The Truman political strategy was successful and obliges us since 70 years to listen to the fairy-tale of USA as the winner.
